This Expression of Interest, due by 31 October 2020, is seeking a sculptural concept and design for the “Lighthouse” position on the Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail. This significant and commanding sculpture, will become an iconic art piece for the Township of Penneshaw and will articulate the resilience of Kangaroo Island. The piece must be unique, original and specific to the location.
This location is the most significant within the trail and sits on top of a hill with a dedicated staircase. The site is visible from the ocean, township and all areas of the sculpture trail. The sculpture will become an iconic symbol for the trail, and to the whole area.
The commissioned piece will celebrate the resilience of nature and the Kangaroo Island Community. The concept must reflect the guiding principles and criteria within the arts policy.
Scale & Visability:
The piece will be of significant scale to be visible from the township adjacent to the trail, the ferry terminal and all vantage points within the trail. As a guide, it is envisaged the work will be approximately 5 meters tall. The site for the work is approximately 3.8 m x 3.8 meters. Importantly, the work will also be illuminated by solar lighting for night time visibility.
The Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail is located within a delicate dune system, and design must give careful consideration to the installation process. Large machinery will not be allowed on site.
