A unique visitor experience for all ages, the Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail is a 1.5km grade three hiking trail that wanders through the dunes of Hog Bay showcasing art from around the island and around the world. Owned and operated by the community, this attraction is a living example of the power of volunteers and the connection at the heart of a small community where all are welcome.

Just a short five-minute walk from the Sealink Ferry Terminal, the Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail in Penneshaw offers an inspiring mix of art, nature, and outdoor adventure. Spot a range of iconic flora and fauna on the trail including goannas, wallabies, insects, dolphins and endemic trees dated hundreds of years old.

Our volunteers have given the trail a spring spruce-up, ready to welcome visitors for the new season.

We’re so grateful to our incredible volunteer team, who donate their time, energy, and hard work so that the funds donated to the trail go directly to bringing new artworks to life.

We are excited to announce the commissioning of our second major installation of the year. 'Ellispsis' by sculptor George Andric is a stunning addition to the Kangaroo Island Sculpture trail, made possible by generous private benefactors.

The essence of our vision for the trail. Art with meaning immersed in nature as local wildlife peacefully graze. The sounds of rolling waves in the background & visitors quietly soaking it all in.

PROGRESSION by artist @andrewmayart. A labour of love by Andrew & our committee, for our community.

Thank you to our generous donors & the many community members who joined us to commission this major new installation celebrating our maritime heritage - past and present.

Crafted over 3 months from locally reclaimed wood, Andrew contributed so much more to our trail.

We are so incredibly excited to share the progress of our next major installation 'Boat' by talented sculptural artist @andrewmayart .

Thanks to the generous donations of our community & private patrons, we are 96% funded!

Andrew has been bringing his vision to life through an artist-in-residence on Kangaroo Island for almost two months. Living in his van, working in a donated shed space, crafting wood reclaimed locally from the Dudley Peninsula.

While here, Andrew has contributed more to our trail than he will ever receive, spending any spare time volunteering to restore many elements of the trail.

You can see the sculpture in progress in the node directly behind the caravan park.

There is still time to help us get to 100% funding to complete Andrew's full installation. All donations over $2- are tax deductible via the Federal Government's @ausculturalfund

The next major installation on the Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail is getting closer!

'Boats' by sculptor Andrew May pays tribute to our Island's Maritime history. It draws on the stories of Kangaroo Island’s first settlers who relied on the sea for survival and who protect and work on it today.

We have received generous community & private donations for four figures and are still fundraising for the final three. To assist us in making the full installation come to life, donations large, small, private & corporate are welcome.

The creation of the Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail was a leap of faith. To create a nature based trail that would become a place to experience our people and place through art.

The installations came to us through wonderful means: donations by anonymous artists (like Wave, pictured), community families honouring their heritage, generous grants, and crowd funding.

Six years after our opening, we're working towards our 16th installation. 'Boats’ will be a major work honouring our region's maritime story, created in residence from local heritage wood by artist @andrewmayart .

Celebrating the story of Kangaroo Island through sculpture, step into Kangaroo Island’s rich maritime history with a major new installation celebrating resilience, community, and the spirit of exploration.

This powerful work by renowned artist Andrew May draws upon stories of Kangaroo Island’s first settlers, who relied on the sea for survival. These early pioneers braved the waters of Christmas Cove, transferring goods and livestock from ships to shore by rowboat—an enduring symbol of their determination and connection to the land and sea. Andrew May will travel to Kangaroo Island for an artist-in-residence to bring the installation to life. Andrew will craft seven life-sized figures using recycled hardwood from the historic Penneshaw Jetty.

Whether you contribute $20 or more, your generosity ensures this story will be shared for generations. All donations over $2 via the Australian Cultural Fund @ausculturalfund are tax-deductible. To fund one of the seven figures, your donation of $3,600 will receive permanent acknowledgment on-site as a benefactor of this significant work.

An enormous day yesterday for the Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail committee, artist @deborah.sleeman and the Penneshaw Progress with our newest major installation 'Wind Rider' arriving at her new home.

Thank you to the caring & hardworking team of volunteers who ensured she was installed with the care she deserves.

This stunning art-meets-engineering kinetic sculpture will sail the prevailing breezes that flow from Backstairs Passage to Hog Bay & through the Sculpture Trail.

She celebrates the women of Kangaroo Island & was made possible through the generous donations of almost 200 community members, friends & family of @sarahstronglaw , in her honour.

There is still work to do. At Wind Riders base will be laid several hundred tiles hand-made by the women of Kangaroo Island, honouring the stories of those who have inspired them. Surrounding the sculpture, Sarah's husband Boone Law is crafting stone seating so the sculpture will become a place of gathering, connection & story-telling.

We are so excited for Wind Rider's commissioning event on Sunday 25th February at 10.30am. All are welcome, please indicate your attendance via our Facebook event for catering purposes.

'The Humpy' by Bianka Kennedy is not just a beautiful artwork. It offers an invitation to pause & take in the surroundings across the Sculpture Trail & Hog Bay to the mainland beyond.

Meaning ‘rounded over’, humpy forms a protective embrace, a loving hug from nature. Humpy builds on a series of works designed to interrupt, bringing attention to details that may otherwise be overlooked.

This installation was made possible by a giving circle - a group of connected community members who came together to fund the project.

Orchid Garden by artist Victor Waclawik is a great example of a group of donors collaborating on a major installation.

Each of the twelve sculptures were funded by a member of the Trethewey family to commemorate their connection to this place.

Our community at its best! This amazing group of people gave up their Monday morning to wheelbarrow & hand shovel an entire truckload of concrete onto site on the trail, to lay the foundations for our next major installation, 'Wind Rider' in honour of @sarahstronglaw.

We were expecting a long hard morning of work, instead with this crew we were having knockoff morning tea in less than an hour. Thank you so much to every member of this team, we appreciate your support more than we can say.

A few weeks of curing, then we'll be moving on to installation & laying the hundreds of beautiful handmade tiles created by our community at Wind Rider's base.

A magical community art & connection experience.

Last weekend a wide our community came together for three special workshops to create a community art space for our upcoming major installation.

Artist Deb Sleeman's installation 'Wind Rider' honours the women of Kangaroo Island. The installation will be a 3-metre-high copper kinetic sculpture that floats above the earth, moving with the prevailing winds. Anchoring its base will be over 300 clay tiles, each one hand carved by our community with a special memory or ode to a Kangaroo Island woman.

The workshops connected friends & strangers for an afternoon of connection, creativity & story-sharing.

We could feel Sarah Strong-Law in the room with us - it was just the type of gathering she would love.

Winter brings beautiful wild bulbs & stunning light to the trail. Nature & art nestled together.

Sculpture by the sea, indeed!

You can wander the trail, viewing sculptures framed by the sea, the parade of visiting cruise ships & the @sealinkki ferry docking, with the sounds of children playing on the sands of Hog Bay Beach in the background.

It's been a wonderful few months watching cruise ship passengers & holidaymakers discover our Sculpture Trail set amongst the meandering paths & sand dunes.

As we head into autumn & the first rains arrive, we'll see the flora around the trail completely change, creating a new experience.

Some sculptures on the trail make a bold statement, while others sing a quieter song.

Take a walk on the trail on one of these stormy spring days & you'll hear The Rattle Tree by artist Matt Nettheim catching the breeze, the bells on each rattle creating a tune in harmony with nature.

Each rattle is woven from locally sourced Kangaroo Island Spiny Rush-Junctus. The rattles will naturally degrade over time & be replenished each time Matt returns to the island.
